Its streets have a special flavor, like of decadence. The buildings give you the idea that they were new, even modern once. But it's not like that. There always exist a great number of old structures in Montevideo that guarantee that flavor of expired splendor."

Asado a lo Gourmet

Quien sabía que iba a encontrar ésto en el camino a casa? Aparte de carne, se hizo naranjas y cebollas en tres parrillas enormes.
Sin camara, llegue a casa y volví a salir. Ni siquiera llegue a la Plaza Zabala cuando me guiaba el olor a leña por autopiloto hasta llegar a Jacinto. La muestra gastronómica de un asado nocturno en Ciudad Vieja es una prueba de actividad después del horario laboral. Un asado es siempre buen idea y esto fue hecho a gran escala. Qué manera aprovechar la noche fresca y clara.

*El fuego es uno de los tres símbolos en que se basan los rituales ancestrales de esta noche. Es el elemento purificador que nos libera de la mala suerte y por eso se le alimenta lanzándole muebles viejos, también se usa escribir en un papel una lista de todo lo que queremos dejar atrás en nuestras vidas y quemarlo en esa hoguera.
*El Agua es el segundo símbolo de San Juan. Se dice que esta noche todas las aguas tienen virtudes curativas, y por eso en algunos lugares es costumbre bañarse en el mar o en el río.
*Las Hierbas son el tercer elemento mágico. Se cree que las plantas quintuplican sus propiedades curativas en esta noche, y algunas, como el tomillo, el romero o la misma de San Juan se recogen para realizar remedios*

Gardel's body

Carlos Gardel died in Colombia in 1935 along with his guitarists or personnel Alfredo Le Pera, Guillermo Barbieri, Ángel Riverol and José Compas Moreno. The famous singer was buried in Medellin for six months but do you think that was the end of El Invicto? You'd better not: Carlitos's cadaver took a 51 day tour from the Colombian cities of La Pintada, Riosucio, Armenia and Buenaventura to New York, Rio and Montevideo before arriving back to Buenos Aires.
